What is a JP2 File?
A .JP2 file is a bitmap image which is an improvement to the JPEG format. The JPEG format is based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), whereas the JP2 format is based on the lossless wavelet compression algorithm. The JP2 file supports any color depth alongside the metadata for the image.
It is mostly used to store medical images, such as CT and MRI scans, since the compression ratio is much better than the other imaging formats, saving space on the storage drive, plus the lossless technology maintains the integrity of the data.
