What is a WEBP File?
The WEBP format contains a raster image file which is compressed significantly better than some other compressed imaging formats, such as JPEG, etc. and maintains the quality of the image. It was acquired by Google from On2 Technologies for web graphics to improve upon other image formats like JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc.
A year after it was released in 2009, Google improved the original format to support new features like animations, transparency, and metadata, while using the same .WEBP file extension.
