What is a WMV File?
A WMV file contains video content that is compressed using Windows Media Video (WMV) and saved in the Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF). It supports high-definition (HD) video and can save animations, video clips, TV shows, movies, and other types of media. WMV files also support encryption so they can work with Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems.
A WMV video file can be played with media players, mostly those included with Windows, and streamed over the Internet. Additionally, WMV is the default video file format for Windows Media Player. That said, the WMV file format has been superseded by more advanced compression formats, therefore it has lost its popularity over the last decade.
