What is an XLSX File?
The XLSX file format is a spreadsheet file in the Open XML format. It may contain mathematical functions, styles, charts, and formatting. It was developed by Microsoft for Microsoft Excel but can also be opened and edited by other spreadsheet programs, like Apple Numbers or OpenOffice Calc.
The XLSX file format was introduced in Microsoft Excel 2007 as the default replacement for .XLS format. XLS files save spreadsheet data in a single binary file, whereas XLSX files store data as different files and folders in a compressed Zip package. XLSX files also contain .XML files that describe the worksheet within the spreadsheet.
