What is a CLASS File?

A .CLASS file contains code in Java, and is created by a Java compiler. The code is stored as binary zeros and ones inside a CLASS file which is understood and executed by a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). CLASS files are usually accompanied by an environmental variable $CLASSPATH inside a .JAR file for execution purposes.

A CLASS file needs to be compiled before its execution, which can be done using the “javac” cmdlet. However, since there are different versions of JVM available, some CLASS files may not be compatible with all JVMs.
